World Day of Prayer for Priests 2008

Message for the World Day of Prayer for Priests

Prayer is a vital source of spiritual life for priests, crucial to their ministry, says the Vatican. In a special message for the World Day of Prayer for Priests, Cardinal Claudio Hummes, Prefect of the Congregation for Clergy, says:

"The Church's mission largely depends on each person's personal relationship with the Lord Jesus and must therefore be nourished by prayer: 'It is time to reaffirm the importance of prayer in the face of the activism and growing secularism'. (Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est). Let us not tire of drawing on his Mercy, of letting him look at and medicate the painful wounds of our sin, in order to marvel at the ever new miracle of our redeemed humanity"

Mgr Keith Barltrop, Director of the Catholic Agency to Support Evangelisation says: “I have come to realise that for me as a priest a personal relationship with Jesus, nourished by generous time given to prayer, is not a luxury but an absolute necessity. Prayer enables me to see Christ working through my very weakness, and gives me the great joy of knowing my empty hands to be his instruments.”

The World Day of Prayer for Priests is on May 30th, the Feast of the Sacred Heart.
