Day for Life supports newly opened Catholic Deaf Centre in Cardiff

Thanks to the generosity of parishioners up and down the country who gave to the Day for Life collection last year, the newly opened Archdiocese of Cardiff Deaf Centre has just received a cheque for £3,000.
The Most Reverend Peter Smith, Archbishop of Cardiff and Chair of the Department for Citizenship and Responsibility made the presentation to the Director of the Archdiocese of Cardiff Deaf Service, Sr Mary Chisholm D.C, at the opening and blessing of the new centre on the evening of Thursday 27 September 2007.
A Catholic Deaf Service has existed in South East Wales under various guises since the late seventies, but as the service has grown, the need to access the physical and spiritual resources provided by the Archdiocese has become increasingly apparent, hence one of the major reasons why it has moved to a new centre.
“We now have a wonderful new building,” said Sr Mary Chisholm. “As you can imagine equipping the new deaf centre has not been cheap. In light of this we were absolutely delighted to receive a cheque for £3000 from the Day for Life collection last year. With our new centre, we look forward to serving the deaf and hard of hearing in Wales for many years to come.”
“I’m delighted that Day for Life 2006 has been able to support the invaluable work of the Catholic Deaf Service,” said the Most Reverend Peter Smith, Archbishop of Cardiff. “It does a great job in providing much needed spiritual and practical support to the deaf and hard of hearing throughout Wales.”
Last year’s Day for Life celebrated the life and presence of disabled people in the Church and in society today. A number of disability projects and organisations will receive financial support and work will begin on a national resource to provide disability awareness education / catechesis programmes for use in parishes and in schools.
